Now what?

This will be short, mostly to ease my mind (if it does that). We saw a house last night. Looked pretty good. Had all the things we technically wanted in a house, but I'm not sure if it had that ... "spark". Neither Kerry, nor I, can figure out if we're being overly rational and cautious, if we're just nervous about a big purchase. Maybe our guts are telling us something. Maybe it's just that the price is higher than we had initially budgeted for.

Anyone with house buying experience have any advice? Do you just know, like our realtor has assured us? Is this like dating, where the final decision is short and swift and overwhelmingly felt, not thought?

If you're not sure keep looking, otherwise you'll always wonder if you would have found something better. I suppose that's sort of like dating as well. Plus, looking at some more houses might make this one stand out as "the one."

I have no house buying experience but I'm definitely firmly in the camp of you'll know it when you see it!

Thanks guys. Yup, you definitely know it when you see it, and this wasn't it. As Kerry and I both noted, it's kind of like ending a relationship with someone that's great, but not quite right. You know it'll work out for someone else, and that's kind of nice.

So, the hunt continues.

just like a new love interest, make sure it isn't funky "downstairs" aka nobody likes a stinky basement. it will save you a lot of hmmming and hahhing. look in the basement first. if it is moldy, wet or dirty, you know it isn't worth your time. (also check for more than 6 foot ceilings in said basement). oh, and closets it turns out are a very nice "invention" that didn't exist in 1907.
